Exciting City to Visit – New York

New York City hosts nearly 50 million tourists a year and features a family-friendly ambience full of culture and fun for kids. While we could write for days bout all the wonderful and exciting sights to see in New York, we’ll keep this blog post focused on fun for kids.

The Statue of Liberty has been one of New York’s most popular attractions for more than a century. Fortunately, Liberty Island reopened on July 4 after closing for nine months to repair damage from Hurricane Sandy. If you’re interested in climbing the 393 steps to Lady Liberty’s crown, be sure to make a reservation (permitted for kids over 4 feet tall.)

New York is the ultimate mecca for museum lovers. A can’t-miss destination for the whole family is the American Museum of Natural History, one of the largest and most renowned museums in the world, on the Upper West Side. For all you big kids, don’t miss the Museum of Modern Art, known as MOMA, on 53rd St. near 6th Ave. Children 16 and under receive free admission.

Perhaps the world’s most famous urban park, Central Park sits right in the center of Manhattan. Spend some time walking through the 15-acre Sheep Meadow and you’ll see soccer and Frisbee games, young couples in love and a wide array of interesting characters representative of New York’s cultural diversity.

The kids will enjoy the Boathouse, Central Park Zoo and the famed carousel. If you visit New York in the winter, you must check out the skating rink — you might just catch a glimpse of a celebrity.

Speaking of toys, no family trip to New York would be complete without visiting FAO Schwarz, the oldest toy store in the United States. Featured prominently in the Tom Hanks movie Big, the iconic storefront at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street is renowned for its high-end toys, life-sized stuffed animals and real-life toy soldiers.

If you have any time left, you can take convenient subway rides to attractions in neighboring boroughs: The Bronx Zoo is one of the world’s largest metropolitan zoos, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden and neighboring Prospect Park welcome more than a million visitors each year.We encourage everyone to visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and the new Freedom Tower in Lower Manhattan. A number of downtown attractions are just a short walk from the Memorial, including Battery Park, the South Street Seaport and City Hall.
